Sometimes, there simply are not enough hours in the day, no matter how early you rise in the morning or despite how organised you are. Still, there always seem to be jobs that you never quite get around to doing. Often, these are typing jobs.
We are frequently asked to explain what it means when we refer to the term “digital copy”. Actually, it is much more simple than a lot of our clients realise. “What does digital copy mean?” is by no means a silly question, but it does have a simple answer. In this instance, it refers to handwritten notes being sent to a professional typist (like The Yorkshire Editor), the typist typing them up into typed up notes to create text and this creating the digital copy of the document you had originally handwritten. You would then be able to access the digital copy of your notes at any time, from anywhere, via a Word Document.
One of the most common reasons why our clients ask us to type up their notes for them is due to legibility issues. They want to ensure that anyone who needs or wants to read their writing is actually able to physically read it! This is often not the case with handwritten documents, sometimes due to cursive script style handwriting but also this could be due to any form of illness, like Parkinson’s or a tremor, which cause the hand to shake. With typed up text creating a digital copy, these elements can all be eradicated. There is also the added bonus of assisting readers with some kinds of visual impairments to be able to read digital copy as the font style and size can be changed to assist them. Also, for the hearing impaired, the text can be read out loud using a standard computer programme, at no extra cost to the user.
In a similar vein, digital copy is fire, water and theft -proof, so there would be no need for you to worry about anything happening to the digital copy of a document, unlike that of a notebook or handwritten work. You would never be able to get the words back from a notebook that had been burned in a fire, for example. They would be lost forever! However, the digital copy of a text document saved to Google Docs, for example, would be totally safe. A physical computer could be burned, yes, but the digital copy of a document could never be burned or lost forever!
Often, we are limited to who we can communicate with due to location and circumstance. Thanks to the wonderful invention of the internet, this is no longer the case. A notebook would be hard to send to friends and family around the world, guaranteeing that it was safe and would reach each destination intended. Just imagine how long that would take and the cost! With a digital copy there is no need to take any of this into consideration at all. Anyone, anywhere, can see your digital copy – in fact, multiple people, in multiple locations can all see it at once, immediately, and it’s free!
Gone away on holiday or to visit friends, and suddenly want to show them the manuscript you’ve shed blood, sweat and tears working on? If you only had that notebook but you had left it at home. Now you can’t show anyone your hard work… But, if you had a digital copy of your typed up notes, you could access this on any laptop or tablet to hand. You don’t have to specifically pack it or take it with you, in fact, you don’t even have to take your own technology with you. Has your text been edited already but you need a final pair of eyes to look it over? Proofreading is an essential final check that ensures all errors are flagged and amended BEFORE your text gets published. The aim of this service is to ensure that any spelling, grammar and punctuation errors are caught before the eyes of the public see your writing. Typographical and formatting errors (the aesthetics) can be flagged here, too. This may be the final service before publication but you’d be amazed at what we pick up here! You should also be aware that if your proofreader finds a high volume of errors, they can also recommend that it goes back to your editor at this point.
Send us a copy of your pre-completed/edited manuscript so that we can read through it as if we were the desired target audience. We will highlight any challenges, inconsistencies and plot holes, as well as provide you with a report containing feedback to help you enhance your work.
