What Is a Digital Copy of a Document?

We are frequently asked to explain what it means when we refer to the term “digital copy”. Actually, it is much more simple than a lot of our clients realise. “What does digital copy mean?” is by no means a silly question, but it does have a simple answer. In this instance, it refers to handwritten notes being sent to a professional typist (like The Yorkshire Editor), the typist typing them up into typed up notes to create text and this creating the digital copy of the document you had originally handwritten. You would then be able to access the digital copy of your notes at any time, from anywhere, via a Word Document.

Legibility and accessibility

One of the most common reasons why our clients ask us to type up their notes for them is due to legibility issues. They want to ensure that anyone who needs or wants to read their writing is actually able to physically read it! This is often not the case with handwritten documents, sometimes due to cursive script style handwriting but also this could be due to any form of illness, like Parkinson’s or a tremor, which cause the hand to shake. With typed up text creating a digital copy, these elements can all be eradicated.

There is also the added bonus of assisting readers with some kinds of visual impairments to be able to read digital copy as the font style and size can be changed to assist them. Copy Editing

This is where attention to the literal words on the page is paid. We delve into the grammar, spelling, quality of writing, the tone and style of writing, consistency, continuity, and whether the writing is appropriate for the audience it is aimed at.

Mechanical Editing

While the stereotypical “Mechanical Editing” is to ensure that an author/writer is adhering specifically to a Style Guide or Referencing System, like Harvard, which we are more than capable of doing, we generally do things a little differently around here. Why? Because we are asked so frequently to help people either change their language style into a native UK British English written form, or to adhere to a specific Dictionary when checking, amending and editing writings and manuscripts, such as Oxford, Cambridge, or Collins, amongst others.

Fact-checking

A commonly overlooked, but essential area of editing is fact-checking. Not only does this increase your credibility and the accuracy of your writing, but it also ensures that you are legally and ethically protected. Though this SHOULD occur as part of the Copy Editing process, it is often missed out or not completed to a high enough standard by some editors. Therefore, we offer this as a service all on its own, if necessary.

What do you do if you require multiple or all of the above editing services? You request The Big Combo! Combining Line, Copy and Mechanical Editing, along with Fact-checking. This is our most popular service and there’s a good reason for this: it saves writers/authors/businesses a lot of time and an enormous amount of money, at the same time as ensuring the highest quality final product that you will, for certain, be proud of!

Proofreading

Has your text been edited already but you need a final pair of eyes to look it over? Proofreading is an essential final check that ensures all errors are flagged and amended BEFORE your text gets published. The aim of this service is to ensure that any spelling, grammar and punctuation errors are caught before the eyes of the public see your writing. Typographical and formatting errors (the aesthetics) can be flagged here, too. This may be the final service before publication but you’d be amazed at what we pick up here! You should also be aware that if your proofreader finds a high volume of errors, they can also recommend that it goes back to your editor at this point.

Paid Beta Reading

Send us a copy of your pre-completed/edited manuscript so that we can read through it as if we were the desired target audience. We will highlight any challenges, inconsistencies and plot holes, as well as provide you with a report containing feedback to help you enhance your work. Alternatively, some authors prefer to send us a list of questions to answer instead of us writing a report for them, which is a totally viable option if that’s what you prefer.
