Welcome to The Yorkshire Editor.
We are a small business based in the heart of Sheffield designed to specifically target all of your word-orientated needs. We specialise in editing, proofreading and copywriting so that anything you create can be the very best that it can be before anyone else sees it.
Write the right way!
Hi, I’m Katie Hatfield. I started out my career as a teacher with a degree or two under my belt, later moving into copywriting for a marketing company which I quickly found I had a knack for. Whilst doing this, I saw that many people enjoyed writing, loved to tell their stories, and had the most incredibly creative minds. However, they either lacked confidence, didn’t give their writing what it deserved due to their lack of editing/proofreading pre-publication, or never finished something with great potential. This made me think…! What if I could alter this and turn things around, changing the incomplete task into the complete? It’s not every day you get to help someone tick something off their Bucket List, right?!
So, I put those multiple degrees in Education to good use, combined them with professional qualifications from Chapterhouse at Imperial College, London, in proofreading and editing, and I setup The Yorkshire Editor just shy of a decade ago now. Wow! What a ride it has been! From copywriting for corporate giants like Amazon and Walmart, to line editing books for private clients before they go to publishers, to proofreading and fact-checking puzzles for the national papers, no two days are ever the same and I wouldn’t change my job for the world!
Founder of The Yorkshire Editor
Did this title ring a bell? Well, it is absolutely the case for some people when it comes to dealing with words in general; they get frustrated, are ill at ease and don’t know where to turn to for help. Well, that’s where we come in! Using our degrees, specialist qualifications, vast experience and the perfect amount of patience, we have helped hundreds (if not thousands) of clients to become more successful in their specialist industries and genres.
The services we provide are as follows:
Occurring AFTER Substantive and/or Developmental Editing, if you wish to make sure that your text is looking sharp, tight and “on point”, then this is the edit for you! Enhance your style, ease of readability, and get that professional polished feel. As its name suggests, we will scrutinise your choice of words line-by-line to discover what impact your words have and examine the words you have chosen to use, taking clarity into consideration, too.
This is where attention to the literal words on the page is paid. We delve into the grammar, spelling, quality of writing, the tone and style of writing, consistency, continuity, and whether the writing is appropriate for the audience it is aimed at.
While the stereotypical “Mechanical Editing” is to ensure that an author/writer is adhering specifically to a Style Guide or Referencing System, like Harvard, which we are more than capable of doing, we generally do things a little differently around here. Why? Because we are asked so frequently to help people either change their language style into a native UK British English written form, or to adhere to a specific Dictionary when checking, amending and editing writings and manuscripts, such as Oxford, Cambridge, or Collins, amongst others.
A commonly overlooked, but essential area of editing is fact-checking. Not only does this increase your credibility and the accuracy of your writing, but it also ensures that you are legally and ethically protected. Though this SHOULD occur as part of the Copy Editing process, it is often missed out or not completed to a high enough standard by some editors. Therefore, we offer this as a service all on its own, if necessary.
What do you do if you require multiple or all of the above editing services? You request The Big Combo! Combining Line, Copy and Mechanical Editing, along with Fact-checking. This is our most popular service and there’s a good reason for this: it saves writers/authors/businesses a lot of time and an enormous amount of money, at the same time as ensuring the highest quality final product that you will, for certain, be proud of!
Has your text been edited already but you need a final pair of eyes to look it over? Proofreading is an essential final check that ensures all errors are flagged and amended BEFORE your text gets published. The aim of this service is to ensure that any spelling, grammar and punctuation errors are caught before the eyes of the public see your writing. Typographical and formatting errors (the aesthetics) can be flagged here, too. This may be the final service before publication but you’d be amazed at what we pick up here! You should also be aware that if your proofreader finds a high volume of errors, they can also recommend that it goes back to your editor at this point.
Send us a copy of your pre-completed/edited manuscript so that we can read through it as if we were the desired target audience. We will highlight any challenges, inconsistencies and plot holes, as well as provide you with a report containing feedback to help you enhance your work. Alternatively, some authors prefer to send us a list of questions to answer instead of us writing a report for them, which is a totally viable option if that’s what you prefer. As long as we can help ensure that you are giving the very best of yourself on the page, we do not mind what format of feedback you prefer.
As a fully qualified teacher, Katie, BA (Hons), PGCE, QTS, MA, uses her experience, expertise and knowledge to assist writers in the following areas (and more!): - Dyslexia; - Assistance with English as an Additional Language (EAL); - Literacy enhancement; - Phonetic spelling correction; - Transition from US to UK British English.
Are you looking to sell a product or service? Needing a writer to focus on persuading readers to convert from being solely readers to purchasing your product or the service you provide? Copywriting is designed purely to persuade the reader to buy or use your service or product and is targeted at sales and eCommerce. It is meant to be attention grabbing! We love writing for Amazon, Walmart, Product Expert, Ergo Adaptive, Gift Ideas Mag, and so many more businesses as a copywriter to help enhance their sales of the products and services they provide.
Do you know the two E’s of content writing? The purpose of content writing is to Educate or Entertain. Alternatively, content writing can also have the purpose to instruct a reader. If you’re looking to build relationships with your readers, then this is the service you would require, as they would start turning to you for advice. This style of writing is all about engagement and value. Content writing tends to be longer in length and strategy, but being consistent with a blog, for example, would lay a healthy foundation for future sales/services you may wish to provide.
Have you written something out with a trusty pen and paper, but now need it typed out? If you don’t have the facilities, the time or the inclination, we can type it all out for you AND proofread our work, too.
Do you create word puzzles? Need to have them checked? We provide a puzzle editing service which has been used by the nationals. Not only do we check that your clues and answers are correct, we also check that your puzzles are up to standard and that they work as functional word puzzles. Need fact-checking undertaken too? Not to worry – it’s all part of the service!
Do you have something that you would like us to offer as a service but you cannot see as a service currently available? Don’t panic! Just send us a message and we will be sure to help you out in any way we can. If it’s a wordy problem, we will be sure to find a solution wherever possible!
Fiction and non-fiction, a whole host of genres, vast arrays of word counts, we’ve worked on so many different books that it is impossible for us to show you them all.
If you’re interested in taking a look at a few of our most recent book collabs, why not take a look below?
We work with you, at your pace, with great patience, using a timeframe that suits you, in order to perfect your manuscript BEFORE it either heads to the publishers or before you self-publish via KDP (for example). Want to work one-on-one with your editor?
We understand that writing a book is often quite literally a tale of blood, sweat and tears. You need an editor who you trust, who cares, who will be sensitive to you, your text and the subject matter. If this is exactly what you want and/or need, contact The Yorkshire Editor today.

McClure writes of his childhood in a South Yorkshire mining village in the late fifties and early sixties. The eldest of eight children, he paints a picture of life in a mining community shortly after the war. Humour leaps from every page as he takes us through his school years into his early teens and employment at the local colliery. He writes with affection and humour of the many characters he meets along the way and tells of his dreams of travel and adventure. Aged seventeen, he enlists in the Army and boards a train to Barnsley to join his Battalion and chase his dreams. This fully illustrated book also contains a selection of short stories, prose and other works.
Proofreader: Katie Hatfield

“Fallen leaves lying on the grass in the November sun bring more happiness than the daffodils.”
– Cyril Connolly
As we approach the end of the year, with just December between us and 2026, we should pause and enjoy what November brings.
The colours are beautiful, and the sun, when it does poke its head above the clouds at this time of year, is always a bit prettier, a bit more majestic than on a summer's day.
What do you like about November? Let us know in the comments!

Remembrance Day is a poignant one for all of us, but more so this year at The Yorkshire Editor, for we are currently working on a job for a retired Naval Captain.
We are honoured to be working on his manuscript and his story of more than two decades in the Navy.
It is fascinating to hear and read his diary entries and descriptions of both his time onboard his ship and during his travels, not forgetting how he has served this country.
If you have a story to tell, contact Katie today: katie@theyorkshireeditor.co.uk

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November..."
Probably one of the best-known phrases in the English language, and if you went to any school in the UK, you will undoubtedly have a good idea about the origins of the fifth of November, the Gunpowder Plot and Guy Fawkes.
But that was probably a while ago, so why not take this chance to revisit one of the most famous failed plans in history, as an adult?
There have been many books written on the subject, so here are the best non-fiction ones around: bit.ly/479Ns1W
